Bean
1. a. William Bean (b. c. 1721 - d. c. 1786) b. Aberdeen,
Scotland. m. c. 1753 in
Londonderry, Ireland to Nomiah or Naomi Bates (1731 - ). Nomiah (or Naomi)
was
the daugther of Isaac Bates who was probably born in Scotland. William moved
from Scotland to Ireland in 1730. He and his family came to America July 26, 1761
on the ship Admiral Haws with John McAdam, master. William purchased
250 acres of land and patented 250 acres in Granville County, in then South
Carolina. He was a miller. (Protestant Immigrants to South Carolina, 1753 - 1773).
Some mention sources that William was of the MacBean Clan from the parish of
Dores (Inverness-shire), Scotland. A branch of the MacBeans, who settled in
Perthshire, spells its name as MacVean. (Clans, Septs and Regiments of the
Scottish Highlands - The Clans of the Scottish Highlands).
The MacBean/MacBain branches are of Kinchyle and of Tomatin.
Their motto: Touch not the cat bot (without) a glove [or targe (shield)].
The crest of William MacBean, Chief of the MacBeans: A demi-cat gules.
(Clans, Septs and Regiments of the Scottish Highlands - Technical Descriptions
of Armorial Bearings)(Clan and Family Tartians).
